全訳

セント・ジョンズ・ウッド駅までの道中、壊れた有人ロボットに出くわした。最初は、家が道路側に倒壊しているとしか思わず、がれきをよじ登ってはじめて、この機械の巨人を驚きとともに目にした。ロボットのアームは折れてぐちゃぐちゃになり、変な方向に曲がっていた。ロボットは粉々になった家の残骸の中に倒れていて、前の部分は破壊されていた。盲目的にまっすぐこの家に突っ込み、倒れて壊れてしまったのだと思う。その時の私には、どうやらこれは火星人の操縦が失われたせいかもしれないと思えた。がれきの中をよじ登って火星人を見つけることはできず、夕闇ももうすっかり深まっていたので、操縦席をよごす血や、犬がかじって残した火星人の軟らかい骨などは見えなかった。
