全訳
噂によると、このころ人類はとっくに嬉し泣きしながら、仕事の手を止めて握手を交わし、叫びながら、鉄道を補修していた。すでにクレウェ付近まで補修されており、ロンドンへ南下していった。ここ2週間ほど止まっていた教会の鐘は、知らせを突然受け取り、しまいには全イングランドの鐘が鳴りだした。自転車に乗っている人、痩せ顔の人、風采の上がらない人、道沿いでやけどを負った人が、望外の救済に沸き立ち、不気味に虚空を見つめる絶望の火星人に向かって叫んでいた。そして食べ物を求めていた！イギリス海峡を、アイルランド海を、大西洋をこえて、トウモロコシ・パン・肉が救援のために運ばれていた。このとき、世界中の船舶がロンドンへ向かっているようだった。だが、そうしたことは全部知らない。わたしは浮浪していたーー狂気の男だった。
fortnightとあるから、侵攻が始まってから2週間くらいという情報が追加されたな。
