My home was desolate. I perceived the folly* of the faint hope I had cherished so long. And then a strange thing occurred. “It is no use,” said a voice. “The house is deserted. No one has been here these ten days. Do not stay here to torment you. No one escaped but you.”

階段を下りてダイニング・ルームに入った。マトンとパンがあり、もうとっくに腐っていた。ビールのボトルはひっくり返っていた。わたしと砲兵がこの家を去ったときのままだった。家は荒れ果てていた。長いこと抱いていたかすかな望みの愚かさを知った。そのとき、奇妙なことが起こった。「無駄だよ」とその声は言った。「この家に人はいないさ。ここ10日誰もいないんだ。ここにいて自分を罰してはいけないよ。助かったのはお前だけだから。」
