全訳

ロンドンに行くと、フリート・ストリートやストランドで人々が忙しく働いていた。すると、彼らは過去の亡霊に過ぎないのではないかという考えが頭をよぎった。静まり返って哀れだったこの通りにとりついて、あちこちさまよっている幽霊なのではないかと。死んだ街の幻影で、蘇生させた死体に入った偽物の生命なのではないかと。ほかにも奇妙に感じることがある。この最終章を書いたほんの1日前にプリムローズ・ヒルに登って、そこから広大な住宅地を眺めた。その景色は煙と霧のもやに覆われ、ぼんやりと青みがかっていて、遠くのほうではあやふやな姿になって水平線に消えていた。そして、その丘で花が一面に咲いている中、往来する人々を見た。まだ丘にそびえている火星人のロボットを見に来る観光客もいた。はしゃぎまわる子供たちの歓声が聞こえた。そして、あの最後の素晴らしい日の夜明けのもと、火星人の機械がひどく輝いて澄んでいて、静かに引き締まっていたことを思い出す…。
そして何よりもおかしなことは、また妻の手を握ることができて、しかもいくつもの死体を目にしながらも、私も妻も、お互い生きていると信じていたことだ。
