だが、この三日月状の戦線に面するところでは、すべて大砲がスタンバイしていた。ステインズ、ハウンズロー、ディトン、エッシャー、オッカムにおいても、テムズ川の南の丘と林の背後にも、テムズ川の北の平らな牧草地の向こうにも、林や家があつまってじゅうぶん遮蔽物となっているところならどこにでも大砲が配備されていたのだ。信号弾が放たれ、宵闇の中に光が散らばって降り注いでいた。やがて、その光は消えてしまった。そして、これを見ていた砲兵隊員たちは、まもなく来たることを予期し、緊張に震えていた。火星人は防衛線の中へと踏み入れるしかなかった。まもなく、不動の黒い姿の男たちと、夜に入ったばかりで黒光りしている大砲にとって、雷のごとき戦闘の恐怖を味わう決戦の火ぶたが切られることになるのである。
