No doubt the thought that was uppermost in a thousand of those vigilant* minds, even as it was uppermost in mine, was the riddle*—how much they understood of us. （ロシアでは祖国戦争だけど、一般的にはナポレオン戦争ね）。
19世紀初頭（つまりこの小説の80年くらい前）に発生した、フランス（ナポレオン）VSロシア の戦争のこと。
わがフランス軍がロシア首都のモスクワに入ってみると、住民は誰一人おらずもぬけの殻で、直後に放火されてモスクワが灰燼に帰してしまいました。
フランスにモスクワの物資を奪わせず、拠点としても使わせないための「焦土作戦」だったのだ！
なるほど、ここでは、反語的に、モスクワよりはるかに大きなロンドンで同じことをする（住民を全員ロンドンから追い出したうえに、ロンドンを焼き払うこと）のは無理だってことを言っているわけか。

全訳
間違いなく、警戒している人たちが脳内で考えていたことは、火星人がどれくらい人間を理解しているのかという謎だった。わたしでさえそう考えていた。彼らはわたしたち数百万人が管理され、規律に従って、ともに働いていることを理解しているのだろうか？ それとも、わたしたちが砲撃したり、突然砲弾を命中させたり、着実に野営地の周りを包囲しているのは、ミツバチの巣をつついて怒ったミツバチが一斉に襲ってくることと同じようなものだと火星人はみなしているのだろうか？もしや、人類を根絶させようと夢見ているのではないか？ （そのとき、誰も火星人が何を食べるのか知らなかった） あの大きな偵察ロボットの形を見るにつけ、こうした何百もの疑問が頭の中で渦巻いた。そして、頭のもう半分では、知られず隠されている莫大な兵力のことについて考えていた。軍は落とし穴を準備したのだろうか？ハウンズローの火薬工場は囮なのか？ ロンドン市民は、人口規模がより大きいなかで、ロンドンをモスクワにする覚悟と勇気は持ち合わせているだろうか？
