People in these latter* times scarcely realise the abundance* and enterprise* of our nineteenth-century papers. 全訳

日刊紙もとうとうその騒動に気づき、火星の火山に関する記事があらゆるところに現れて人気を博した。まじめでいて滑稽な雑誌の「パンチ」誌が、政治漫画にこれをうまく利用したのを覚えている。ただまったく予想外のことに、火星人が地球に放った宇宙船は、宇宙の空っぽの深淵を通って、一刻一刻、一日一日、ものすごい速さで地球へ近づいていた。すぐに運命の時がくるというのにいつものように些細な関心事をめぐって人々が動き回れたのは、いまとなってはほとんど信じられないほど驚くべきことに思える。マーカムが、当時編集していた写真付き新聞のために火星の新しい写真を手に入れ、たいそう歓喜に満ちていたことを思い出す。最近の人は、19世紀の新聞が内容に富み積極的だったことをほとんど理解していない。わたし自身としては、自転車に乗れるようになるのにひどく夢中で、文明が進歩するにつれて倫理的な考えがどのように発展しうるかということを述べるシリーズ物の論文にとりくむのに忙しかった。
