イタリア人のスキャパレリは火星の研究で有名よね。
彼が火星の表面に線上の模様(canali:自然水路)を発見したと発表したところ、英語に翻訳される際にcanal（運河）と訳されてしまって、火星に人工的なものがあるというデマが広がったエピソードはよく知られてるんじゃないかしら。
あと、「Mars has been the star of war」とあるが、火星はローマの軍神Mars（マルス）（＝ギリシャ軍神アレス）から名付けられたのは有名な話だから知っているかもな。やはり血の色が戦争を連想させるんだろうか。

2. 全訳参照。If省略倒置の仮定法過去完了！ あとIf内の部分、weather permitting（天気が許せば）っていう成語と似た雰囲気を感じます。far back in the 19Cは「19世紀の遥か昔に」とでもしておきましょうか。far backで結構前にさかのぼってることを表しています。
3. 青色の「it」が指しているものは、そのあとのthat以下。by the byeが挟まってるだけで、itーthatの形式主語。
4. 茶色の「but」が繋いでいるものは、watchedとfailed。挿入をかっこにくくれば楽。
5. ピンクの「they」が指しているものは、「Men like Schiaparelli」。
全訳
火星人は驚くほど巧妙に地球着陸の計算をしていたようだ。あちらの数学は明らかに地球の数学をはるかに超えていたのだ。そして、ほとんど全員で団結して準備を進めたみたいだ。わたしたちの天文機器の性能がよかったら、はるかに前の19世紀のうちに、火星で厄介なものができていくのが見られたかもしれないのに。スキャパレリなどがあの赤い星を観察したけど ―それにしても、何十世紀ものあいだ火星が「戦争の星」だったってのは奇妙な話だ―しっかり位置を記録したはずの模様の見た目が変わってくことを解釈できなかった。その間ずっと、火星人は準備していたに違いない。
