English readers heard of it first in the issue of Nature dated* August 2. 2.　「gun」と言っても、小銃みたいなものじゃないですよ。戦車砲でも戦艦砲でも足りないと思います。ロケット発射台ですからね。めっちゃでっかい大砲を作って、砲弾のかわりに、そこから超高速でロケットを打ち出すわけです。

全訳

1894年の衝の間、強い光が火星表面の明るい部分に見られた。最初にリック観測所で、そしてニースのペロタンなど他の観測者も見た。イングランド人は8月2日号のネイチャー誌を読んでそのことを初めて知った。わたしとしては、大きな穴の中での巨大なロケット発射台の建造をこの炎が示していたのだと思いたい。そこから地球にロケットが発射されたのだ。今となってもまだわかっていないが、次の２つの衝の間にも、妙な模様がその炎の近くで見られた。
