1.　赤アンダーラインの部分について、regardは「見る」。littleは準否定語（ほとんど～ない）。butはここではexceptの意味。before meは「目の前の」。簡単な言葉だけど意味に注意しなければならないものばかりですね。

3.　オレンジのカッコ内にはfor。take A for B 「AをBと間違える/思う」ですね。

全訳

はじめは目の前の道路以外ほとんど目を向けていなかったが、不意に、ある物体に気をとられた。その物体は素早くメイベリーヒルの向こうの丘を下っていた。最初は濡れた家の屋根だと思ったが、連続する閃光のおかげで、素早く滑るように動いていると気づいた。視界は不明瞭だったーそのときは困惑するほど暗かったのだ。そこに、日光のような稲光が走った。丘の頂上付近に立っている孤児院の大きな赤い建物や、松の木の梢、そしてこの厄介なものが照らされ、はっきりと鮮明に明るく見えた。
