全訳

わたしからそう遠くないところで、不法占拠者が住み着いている１部屋の小さな木造小屋がジャガイモ畑の中に立っていた。ようやく立ち上がって、かがんでなるべく遮蔽物を利用しながら小屋に走って行った。ドアをガンガンと叩いたが、中にいる人は聞こえていなかったようだ（もしかすると誰も中にいなかったのかもしれないが）。そしてしばらく叩いたのちに諦めた。その後、大部分は明渠を利用しながらメイベリーの方向の松林へと這って行った。この怪物の機械に見つからずに無事松林へと入っていけた。
