Something very like the war fever that occasionally* runs through a civilised* community had got into my blood, and in my heart I was not so very sorry that I had to return to Maybury that night. I was even afraid that that last fusillade* I had heard might mean the extermination* of our invaders from Mars. I can best express my state of mind by saying that I wanted to be in at the death.

1. 赤アンダーライン(Something very…)の主語はsomething、動詞はhad got。
2. 青アンダーラインの部分(I was afraidのthat節内)の主語はthat last fusillade、動詞はmean。
3. 赤マーカー(I can best…)の訳については、by sayingまででいったん切りましょうか。「state of mind」は「心理状態・精神状態」。be in at the deathは、be inで「居合わせる」あたり。at the deathは、「最期の現場」ですね。
全訳
わたしはというと、一日中熱狂的に興奮していた。現代社会も戦争の熱にときおり浮かされるものだが、そういう何かがわたしの中に流れていった。その夜メイベリーに戻らなくてはいけなかったことについては、心中あまり残念には思わなかった。むしろ、かすかに耳にした最後の一斉砲撃で、火星からの侵略者が死に絶えてしまったのではないかと恐れてすらいた。そのときの心理状態はこう言い表すのがもっともよいだろう。「火星人が殺される場に居合わせたかった」と。
「Something 〈very like the war fever 〔that occasionally* runs (through a civilised* community)〕〉 had got into my blood」だが、まずは「関係詞で切る」。
「The war fever occasionally runs…civilised community」と「Something very like that had got into my blood」。
「civilised community」を「文明化した社会」と字義どおりに訳してしまうと、言いたいことがぶれる。
思い出してほしいのが、1900年現在のイギリスはヴィクトリア朝末期。高潔で「ジェントルマン」たる態度が求められる時代であるとともに、たいへん平和な時代だ。
なのに、そういう時代であっても「戦争の熱はたまにやってくる」といいたいのだろう。
（戦争があった）古代や中世の時代だって「文明化」しているのには変わりないのだから、ここではcivilisedを思い切って「現代の」としてみようか。他の案があったら求む。
