全訳

リプリー通りは人気がなかった。窓から光が漏れているところがあるくらいで、リプリーには人がいるしるしが全くなかった。でも、パーフォードに続く道に曲がるところで、危うく事故に遭いそうになった。そこで数人が背中を向けて立っていたのだ。わたしが通り過ぎるときに何も言われなかった。丘の向こうで起きていることをその人たちが知っていたかはわからないし、道中通り過ぎていった静かな家の住人たちがどうしていたのかもわからない。安心して眠っていたのか、家を捨てて避難したのか、それとも、その夜は恐怖を感じて不安になり、外を見ていたのか…。
