全訳

メイベリー・ヒルのふもとまではそこそこの傾斜の坂だ。この坂をガタガタと下って行った。雷が鳴り始めると瞬く間に次々と閃光が走ったが、そんな速い光り方は見たこともなかった。雷鳴も次々に続き、パチパチという奇妙な音を伴って響いた。その音は、いつもの雷の爆発するような残響音というよりは、巨大な電気機械が動いている音のようだった。明滅する光のせいで目がくらみ、混乱しパニックになった。そのうえ、坂を下っている間に突然、まばらなあられまで顔に打ち付けてきた。
