問題編
“Hist*!” said I, in a whisper*.
She stopped astride* of the fence in doubt*. Then she came over and across the lawn* to the corner of the house. She bent down* and stepped softly.
“Who’s there?” she said, also whispering, standing under the window and peering* up.
“Where are you going?” I asked.
“God knows.”
“Are you trying to hide?”
“That’s it.”
“Come into the house,” I said.
I went down, unfastened* the door, and let her in, and locked the door again. I could not see her face. She was hatless*, and her coat was unbuttoned.
“My God!” she said, as I drew her in.
“What has happened?” I asked.
“What hasn’t?” In the obscurity* I (gesture,could,made,a,of,see,she,her) despair*. “They wiped us out—simply wiped us out,” she repeated again and again.

1. 青アンダーラインの文型は、she stopped astrideの第２文型でしょう。go Vingとか、arrive tiredとか、普通は第１文型の自動詞であっても、後ろに主語の状態を表すCが来た場合には第２文型になりますよね。
2. 青のand(２つあるけどまとめて)が繋いでるものは、went, unfastened, let, locked。
3. 赤アンダーラインのカッコ内の語句を並び替えると、could see she made a gesture ofとなります。herは不要です。ここはsee S Vで「～ということがわかる」という意味ですね。なお、「see her made」はmadeが原形ではないのでこの語順になることはありません。
全訳
「おーい！」とささやくようにわたしは声をかけた。
その子は柵にまたがりながら不審そうに動きを止めた。そして柵を乗り越えて芝生を横切り、敷地の隅まで身をかがめ静かに歩いた。
「そこに誰かいるのかい？」とあちらもささやいた。窓の下に立ってこちらを見上げていた。
「どこに行くつもりなんだ？」とわたしは尋ねた。
「さあね」
「隠れ場所を探しているのか？」
「そういうことだ」
「ならこの家に入ってきなよ」とわたしは言った。
わたしは一階に降りてドアを開け、その子を中に入れ、再びドアを閉めた。彼女の顔は見えなかった。帽子はなく、コートはボタンが外れていた。
「神よ！」と入ってくるときにその子はつぶやいた。
「何が起きたんだ？」とわたしは尋ねた。
「逆に何が起きていないというんだい？」
不明瞭ではあったが、その子が絶望を示すジェスチャーをしているのがわかった。
「あいつらに殲滅されたー単に殲滅されたんだ」と何度もくりかえした。
