The hussars* had been on the road beyond the curvature* of the ground, and she saw nothing of them. She heard the Maxims rattle for a time and then become still. The giant saved Woking station and its cluster* of houses until the last; then in a moment the Heat-Ray was brought to bear*, and the town became a heap of fiery* ruins. Then the Thing shut off the Heat-Ray, and turning its back upon the artilleryman*, began to waddle* away towards the smouldering* pine woods that sheltered* the second cylinder. As it did so a second glittering Titan built itself up out of the pit.

全訳

数分の間、ミッちゃんが見える範囲では、共有地に生きているものはひとつも残されていなかった。まだ黒焦げにはなっていない共有地の茂みや高木も炎を上げていた。湾曲した丘の向こうの道にいた騎兵隊も、誰も見えなかった。しばらくマキシム機関銃が鳴り響いていたが、すぐに静かになった。あの巨大ロボは、ウォーキング駅とそのまわりの住宅地を最後まで取っておいた。そして瞬時にレーザー光線の照準を合わせ、街は燃え盛る残骸の山となり果てた。そしてロボはレーザー光線の射撃をやめ、砲兵に背を向けて、煙を上げている松林へとよたよた歩き始めた。そこには２番目の円筒宇宙船が落下していたのだ。そうしている間、２体目の金属の巨人は穴の要塞の中で組み立てられていた。
