全訳

２体目の怪物は１体目を追って行った。すぐにミッちゃんは、ホーセルの方に広がっている熱いヘザーの灰の上をとても用心深く退避していった。なんとか生きて道の側の明渠に飛び込み、ウォーキングまで逃げて行った。そこで突然ミッちゃんの口調が激しくなった。その場所は通過できなかったのだ。そこの数人は生きているようだったが、ほとんどは狂乱状態で、多くの人は火がついたりやけどしたりしているようだった。ミッちゃんは火災に阻まれて引き下がるしかなく、火星人ロボの一体が帰って行く間、ほとんど焦げ付いている崩れた壁の山の中に隠れていた。このロボがある子を追いかけて、鋼鉄のアームで捕まえて、松の木の幹にその子の頭を叩きつけるのが見えた。やっと夕暮れが来た後、ミッちゃんは鉄道の土手を走り越えた。
