全訳

これらの３つの主な光源ー住宅、車両、チョブハム方面の炎上している区域ーの間に、真っ暗な土地が不規則に連なっていた。薄暗く炎が上がり煙が出ている箇所があちこちにあり、そこで真っ暗な部分が途切れていた。こんな風に闇が広がる中に火が上がっているというのは、本当に奇妙な光景だった。それを見て、夜中のスタッフォードシャーの光景を真っ先に思い出した。
最初、一生懸命誰かいるか探したが、誰一人として姿を認めることはできなかった。しばらくして、ウォーキング駅の炎の明かりをバックに、幾人かの黒い人影が次々と線路を急いで横切っていくのが見えた。
