問題編
Byfleet was in a tumult*; people packing*, and a score of* hussars*, some of them dismounted*, some on horseback*, were hunting* them about. Three or four black government waggons*, with crosses in white circles, and an old omnibus*, among other vehicles, were being loaded in the village street. There were scores of* people, most of them sufficiently sabbatical* to have assumed* their best clothes. さて次に「corporal」は「伍長」。
士官階級については以前話したと思うけど、兵・下士官の階級は、private→lance corporal→sergent→staff sergent という風に出世していくよ。イギリス陸軍公式サイトを見てみるといいかもな。

corporalになるとsection（10人くらいのグループ）を指揮できるようになりますよ。
最後に、政府公用車に描かれていた「crosses in white circles」は、イングランド国旗なのかもしれないにゃ。

全訳
バイフリートは騒乱状態だった。住民は荷造りをしており、20人ほどの騎兵（馬から降りている兵も馬に乗ったままの兵もいた）が住民を駆り立てていた。イングランド国旗が刻まれた３、４台の黒い政府公用車や、古い乗合馬車が数多の乗り物の中に見られたが、道路上で荷物を積み込んでいるところだった。たくさん人がいたが、ほとんどの人はすっかり安息日の気分のようだった。なにせ、一番いい服でおめかししている人もいたのだ。兵士たちはいまの状況の重大さを理解させるのに大変苦労していた。わたしたちはあるシワシワの老人を見た。その人は巨大な箱と20個以上のランの植木鉢を運んでおり、それらを置いていかせようとする伍長に向かって怒気を含んで反駁していた。わたしは立ち止まって男の腕をつかんだ。
この「old fellow」は男のままなんだな。
活躍するのは女の子にしたいけど、ここはダメなやつだから男の方がよくないか。
それもそうだな。
