問題編
“Do you know what’s over there?” I said, pointing at the pine tops that hid the Martians.
“Eh?” said he, turning. “I was explainin’ these is vallyble.”
“Death!” I shouted. “Death is coming! Death!” and leaving him to digest* that if he could, I hurried on after the artillery-man. At the corner I looked back. The soldier had left him, and he was still standing by his box, with the pots of orchids* on the lid of it, and staring vaguely* over the trees.

1. オレンジのvallybleを書き言葉に直すと、valuable（価値がある）ですね。
2. 赤のandが繋いでるものは、前後のSV。
3. 青のthatが指しているものは、抜き出すなら「Death is coming」ですかね。
4. 緑のitが指しているものは、his box。ここらへんはwith O Cの形なので、「ランの植木鉢を箱の蓋の上に置いて」くらいで訳しましょう。
5. 紫のandが繋いでるものは、he wasに繋がるstandingとstaringととってもいいし、分詞構文のwith～とstaring～ととってもいいと思います。
全訳
「あそこで何が起きてるか知ってるのかよ？」と火星人を隠している松の木を指さしながらわたしは言った。
「え？」と振り向きながら老人は言った。「大事なものだって言ってるだろうが」
「死ぬんだぜ！」と叫んだ。「死が迫ってるんだ、死ぬんだぞ！」 この言葉の意味を理解できるかは老人に任せ、その場を離れてミッちゃんの後を急いで追った。
曲がり角で振り向いた。兵士も老人を見捨てていた。老人はまだ箱のそばに立ったまま、箱の上にランの植木鉢を置き、林の方を虚ろに見つめていた。
21世紀だと「老害」といわれるんだろうな。
でも老人のそういう習性はこの当時から変わっていないな。
変わらないのは老人だけじゃないけどね。
