drinking fountainはよく公園にあったりする水飲み場でしょうか。
いちおう「fountain(噴水)」なので、上にふき上げるタイプだと思います。
そして「grenadiers」（擲弾兵）が出てきてるわね。ほとんどのみんなは「British Grenadiers」を思い浮かべるかしら。そのグレナディアーズよ。
Grenadiersは歴史と名誉ある歩兵部隊ね。grenade+er=grenadierだから「グレネード(手榴弾)」に関係する部隊なんだけど、最初、グレネードは精鋭しか扱えない武器だったから、その誇りを込めてGrenadiersという部隊名になったわ。
もちろん、時代とともに手榴弾はほとんどの歩兵に配備されるようになるけど、名前だけは当時の威光を伝えているわ。
そして、有事の際にはもちろん歩兵として戦闘に加わるけど、儀礼・行事でも活躍する部隊となっていったの。

1. 青アンダーラインの文で誤っている部分を訂正すると、最後に「us」が抜けてますね。「what we had brought with」だと、broughtの後とwithの後の2か所空所があることになってしまいます。
2. オレンジカッコに「( ) refuge」が「避難する」という意味になるように動詞一語を入れると、take / find / seekです。takeがメジャーですかね。
3. 赤アンダーラインの文型表示は、We saw～thatの第三文型です。as節が挿入されていますね。
4. 緑のsinceの品詞は副詞です。
全訳
わたしとミッちゃんは水飲み場の階段に腰を下ろし、持ってきたまずまずの食事をとった。巡回していた兵士はーここではもう騎兵ではなく白服のグレナディアーズだったがー砲撃が始まるとすぐ、ただちに移動するか、地下室に避難するように人々に警告していた。わたしたちが線路にかかる橋を渡るとき、ウェイブリッジ駅の構内に入りきらないほどの群衆がますます集まっていて、混雑したプラットフォームに箱や小包が積まれているのが見てわかった。通常の交通輸送は止まっていたのだと思う。チャーツィーの方に軍と砲を運べるようにするためだ。そしてそのあとに聞いた話だが、その後に出された臨時列車の席をめぐって激しい争いが起こったらしい。
