4. 紫のbyの意味は「～を経由して」。detour(回り道)と相性のいい前置詞ですね。
全訳
だが、レザーヘッドにまっすぐ向かおうとすれば、３番目の円筒宇宙船とそれを守る巨人と出くわすことになる。もしわたしが一人だったら、きっとその危険を冒して進んでいっただろう。だが、ミッちゃんはこう言ってわたしを思いとどまらせてくれた。「そんな申し分のない奥さんを未亡人にするなんてひどいじゃないか」って。とうとうわたしは折れて、林の中に隠れながらストリート・コブハムまではミッちゃんと一緒に北進し、それから別れることに決めた。そこからエプソンを経由する迂回路をとり、レザーヘッドに向かうことにした。
