全訳
怒号が飛び交っており、ジョークを言っている人までいた。この場で群衆はこんな考えを持っていたように思う。火星人は単に手ごわい人間の仲間で、町を攻撃して荒らすかもしれないが、最後は確実に滅ぼされるだろうという考えだ。ときどき、人々はウェイ川の対岸、チャーツィー方面の草地を不安げに見つめていた。でも、そこはまったく静まりかえっていた。
