今回のMapだよ。
「Surrey side」というのは、テムズ川をはさんでウェイブリッジ側のことだろうね。
Surreyというのはカウンティっていう大きな地域区分で、都道府県みたいなものだけど、あんまり気にしなくていいよ！
「inn(宿屋)」が閉まっていた理由が「prohibited hours(営業禁止時間)」ってあるけどさ、風営法みたいな法律があるのか？ ほら、21世紀の日本では、ホストクラブは深夜12時までしか営業しちゃいけないとか決まってるぜ。
ひょっとして、ここラブホとかのR18系の宿屋か？
なわけないでしょ。
まずね、「inn」は単なる宿泊施設じゃなくて、飲み屋（パブ）もセットになってるものが一般的よ。パブが１階、宿泊部屋が２階、みたいな感じね。
そして、風営法的な法律（イギリスではLicensing Act）によってパブの営業時間が決められてるから、時間外の今は宿屋ごと閉鎖してたってわけ。
もう少し細かく言うと、1874年改正のLicensing Actによって、以下のように決められたわ。
3. All premises in which intoxicating liquors are sold by retail shall be closed as follows;
＜中略＞
(3.) If situate elsewhere than in the metropolitan district or the metropolitan police district or such town or populous place as aforesaid,—
(a.) On Saturday night from ten o’clock until half an hour after noon on the following Sunday; and
(b.) On Sunday night from ten o’clock until six o’clock on the following morning; and
(c.) On the nights of all other days from ten o’clock until six o’clock on the following morning.

（首都圏以外では）土曜の夜10時～日曜の昼12時半まで閉店が義務付けられているの。
日曜日は安息日だから朝から酒飲むなってことよ。ヴィクトリア朝はこういう保守的な考えが強かったからね。もちろん、21世紀ではこんな制限はないわ。
わたしたちがinnにたどり着いたのはちょうど日曜の12時ごろだから、まだギリギリ開いてないってとこだ。ひょっとするとこのinnの芝生にいる兵士は、innがオープンするのを待ってるのかもしれないな。

全訳
テムズ川を越えると、渡し場のところ以外はすべて静かで、サリー側とは対照的だった。ボートからおりてきた人々は小道をてくてく歩いていった。そして大きな渡舟がちょうど離岸したところだった。３、４人の兵士が宿屋の芝地に立って、避難民をじろじろ見ながらジョークを飛ばしていたが、助けを申し出たりはしていなかった。営業禁止時間だったので宿屋は閉まっていた。
「いったいなんなんだ？」と船頭が叫んだ。そして「黙れバカもん！」と、近くの人が吠えている犬に叫んでいた。そのとき、またあの音がした。今回はチャーツィーの方から聞こえ、籠ったドーンという音だった。砲撃音だ。
