1. 赤のasの意味は「～につれて」。比較級と一緒だったらこの意味を疑いましょう。

全訳
そして、斜めに進んでくる５体目もいた。装甲で覆われたロボの機体は太陽の光を受け、大砲の方めがけて素早く押し寄せてく際にピカピカ輝いていた。その姿は近くなるにつれて急に大きくなっていった。一番左にいる機は、最も遠いところにいたのだが、空高く巨大なケースを見せびらかすようにした。そしてわたしが金曜の夜に一度見たぼんやりとしながらも恐ろしいレーザー光線でチャーツィーを焼き払い、壊滅させた。
この「ケース」っていうのは火星人のレーザー光線発射装置だな。
意外とコンパクトだ。
