The sudden near concussion*, the last close upon the first, made my heart jump. The monster was already raising the case generating the Heat-Ray as the first shell burst six yards above the hood.

1.　赤アンダーラインについては、無生物主語・名詞構文で訳すのはいいとして、the last close upon the firstがちょっとわかりにくいです。でも「最初にすぐ近い最後（の砲撃）」ということですので、「ほぼ同時に」くらいかなと思います。

全訳

次の瞬間、ロボは岸辺にいて、ひとまたぎで川を半分渡った。関節を曲げて少し先の岸に前足を伸ばし、次の瞬間、シェパートン村の近くでまたまっすぐ立ち上がった。ただちに、シェパートン村の外れに隠されていた６門の砲が同時に砲撃を敢行した。この大砲の存在は右岸の人は誰も知らなかった。近くでほぼ同時に突然砲撃した震動で、わたしの心臓は飛び上がった。頭部装甲の上６ヤード（≒5.4ｍ）で最初の砲弾が爆発したが、そのときその怪物はすでにレーザー光線を放つ装置を高く上げていた。
