The shell burst clean in the face of the Thing. The hood bulged*, flashed, was whirled* off in a dozen tattered* fragments of red flesh* and glittering* metal.
“Hit!” shouted I, with something between a scream and a cheer*.
I heard answering shouts from the people in the water about me. I could have leaped out* of the water with that momentary* exultation*.

1.　青アンダーラインは、in time以下の省略を補うと「in time to receive the 4th shell, but not in time to dodge the 4th shell」です。直訳だと「４番目の砲弾を受け止めるには間に合ったが、それを避けるのには間に合わずに、そのフードは振り向いた」となります。「receive」は訳すのが難しいところですが、「防御姿勢をとる」とかでどうでしょうか。
2.　赤アンダーラインは仮定法ですね。だから実際にはそうしていないわけです。

全訳

わたしは驚きの叫び声をあげた。他４体の火星の怪物のことは目に入らず考えもしなかった。いちばん近くで起きたこの事件に釘付けだった。同時に他の２つの至近弾が空中で爆発した。そのとたん、４個目の砲弾がロボットを襲った。上部装甲が回転して防御姿勢を取るには間に合ったが、避けるには時間がなかった。
砲弾はロボの顔の部分にクリーンヒットした。上部装甲は膨らみ、閃光を出し、赤い肉と光る金属がいくつものバラバラの破片となって飛び散った。
「命中だ！」とわたしは叫んだ。その声は悲鳴と歓声を足して２で割ったようなものだった。
川にいる周りの人もそれにこたえるように叫んでいた。わたしはその一瞬の歓喜のために水から飛び出しそうになった。
