問題編
I should have started at once, but my companion* had been in active service* and she knew better than that. She made me ransack* the house for a flask*, which she filled with whisky; and we lined* every available pocket with packets of biscuits* and slices of meat. Then we crept out of the house, and ran as quickly as we could down the ill-made road by which I had come overnight. The houses seemed deserted*. In the road lay a group of three charred* bodies close together, struck dead by the Heat-Ray; and here and there were things that people had dropped—a clock, a slipper*, a silver spoon, and the like poor* valuables. At the corner turning up towards the post office a little cart*, filled with boxes and furniture, and horseless, heeled over* on a broken wheel. A cash box had been hastily* smashed open and thrown under the debris*.

欧米の戦争映画とかで中年兵士が持っているイメージがあるけどみんなはどんなイメージかな？
わたしは哀傷を誘うシーンに出てくるイメージだな。
敵に追い詰められて逃げ込んだ家の中で、最後の戦闘に打って出る前、フラスクに入ったウィスキーをグッと飲み干し、戦友に言うんだ。「次に会うときは地獄だな」って。
でも、こんなに口が小さいと、中身を補充するときに注ぎにくそうですね。
これが風流ってものよ。
つづいて、馬車シリーズ「cart」についてにゃ。
「dog cart」（シルカさんの馬車）が出てきたときにもやったかもだけど、cartは二輪馬車にゃ。

全訳
そのときただちに出発するべきだったが、同行する現役兵士のミッちゃんは、急がない方がいいとわかっていた。ミッちゃんはこの家の中にあるフラスクを探すようにわたしに言って、そしてわたしが見つけてくるとウィスキーを注いだ。そして、わたしたちは可能な限り全ポケットにビスケットの袋や肉の切れ端を詰め込んだ。それからわたしたちは慎重に家から出て、昨夜通ってきた悪路を全速力で下った。どの家にも誰もいないようだった。道中、黒焦げの死体が３体隣り合っていた。レーザー光線で致命傷を負ったのだ。そして避難民が落としていった物があちこちに散らばっていた。時計、スリッパ、銀スプーンなど、低品質な貴重品だ。郵便局に出る角では、箱や家具がいっぱい積まれた小さな二輪馬車が、車輪の破損により横転していた。馬は逃げていた。乗っていた人は現金が入っていた箱を慌てて壊し開け、がれきの下に放り投げていったようだった。
最終文「A cash box had been (hastily) smashed open and thrown (under the debris).」のところは、箱は捨てて中に入った現金だけ持って逃げたってところだな。
