A violent* explosion shook the air, and a spout* of water, steam, mud*, and shattered* metal shot far up into the sky. As the camera of the Heat-Ray hit the water, the latter had immediately flashed into steam. In another moment a huge wave, like a muddy tidal bore* but almost scaldingly* hot, came sweeping round the bend* upstream*. I saw people struggling shorewards*, and heard their screaming and shouting faintly* above the seething* and roar* of the Martian’s collapse*.

ちゃんと「bend」（カーブ）があることが確認できると思う。

ロボが水面に激突した衝撃で「wave」が起こったということだけども、「like a muddy tidal bore」と表現されているね。

「tidal bore」は辞書を引くと「海嘯」「潮津波」と書いてますね！

…でも、「海嘯」は読み方からわかんないし、「潮津波」も人生で聞いたことありませんよ。

タージルム

アマゾン川での「海嘯（かいしょう）」を特に「ポロロッカ」と言ったりするわね。

むしろ「海嘯」と言うよりは「ポロロッカ」と言った方が伝わるんじゃないかしら。

なるほど、「tidal bore」っていうのは、満潮になった海水が川を逆流する現象の総称ってことですね！

ま、そういったところだ。イギリスでも「tidal bore」が観察される川が何本もあるみたいだな。テムズ川はそうじゃないようだが…。

全訳

激しい爆発が空気を震わせた。水・蒸気・泥・金属片が空高く噴き出した。レーザー光線の発射器が水面に落下すると、瞬時に閃光とともに水蒸気爆発が起こった。次の瞬間、巨大な波が上流からカーブを曲がって襲ってきた。ポロロッカの濁流のようだったが、やけどをしそうなくらい熱かった。岸の方へ懸命に逃げようとしている人々が見えた。火星ロボの倒壊によって沸騰し轟く波を浴びた人々から、かすかに悲鳴や絶叫の声も聞こえた。
