Thick clouds of steam were pouring* off the wreckage*, and through the tumultuously* whirling* wisps* I could see, intermittently* and vaguely*, the gigantic limbs* churning* the water and flinging* a splash and spray* of mud* and froth* into the air. The tentacles* swayed* and struck like living arms, and, save for the helpless purposelessness of these movements, it was as if some wounded* thing were struggling for its life amid* the waves. 全訳
蒸気は厚い雲となってロボの残骸から流れ出ていた。激しく巻き起こる蒸気の中で、断続的でおぼろげではあったが、ロボの巨大な足が水を激しく揺らし、水しぶきや泥、泡をはね上げているのが目に入った。ロボの触手は生き物の腕のように揺れたり叩いたりしていた。そうした動きはどうしようもなく無意味なものではあったが、傷ついた生物が生き延びようと波の中でもがいているかのようだった。赤茶色の莫大な量の液体が音をたてながらロボの機械から噴出していた。
