全訳
わたしはロボットの骸を見て動揺していたが、イギリスの工業都市に響くサイレンのような恐ろしい叫び声がして、その声の方に注意が向いた。ある人が、曳舟道のそばで膝までつかりながら、よくわからないことを叫んで指さしていた。振り返ると、他のロボットが大きな歩幅でチャーツィーの方から川岸へ進撃してきていた。シェパートンの砲が今度も砲撃したが、損害は与えられなかった。
サイレンも19世紀後半から実用化されてきたものよ。
