1. 緑のboilを適切に活用させると、boilingですね。誰かが沸騰させたわけじゃないので、ここは自動詞のboilのing形を使いましょう。boiled eggとboiling waterは中学生のころよく間違えたものです。

全訳
ひょっとすると、幾許かの時間、そこに立ち尽くしていたかもしれない。沸騰しかけている水に胸の高さまで浸かり、この場の状況に途方に暮れ、生きのびられるとは思っていなかった。悪臭の中、さっきまで一緒に川の中にいた人が、水中からヨシの草原に這いあがっているのが目に入った。小さなカエルが、進んでくる人間から草むらを逃げているようなものだった。そして彼らはまったく狼狽しながら、曳舟道を右往左往しているようだった。
今回は人間を小さなカエルに例えているが、人間が見下してきた小さな動物に人間自身を重ねる描写は、いままでも何回か登場してきたものだ。
