1. オレンジのandが繋いでるものは、wentとbroke。
2. 赤のtheseが指しているものは、the woods。
3. 緑のthe lineが指しているものは、the railway。
4. 紫のbutの意味は「～だけ」。only, justと同じような意味ですね。ほかにもbutは「～を除いて」という意味もあります。
全訳
わたしたちは道を下っていった。途中で黒服を着た男の死体のそばを通り過ぎた。一晩中ひょうが降っていたので、その体はびっしょり濡れていた。そしてメイベリーヒルのふもとに着くと林の中に入り、線路を目指して進んで行った。誰にも会わなかった。線路沿いのその林は、傷跡が見られたり、黒焦げになったりした木の残骸ばかりだった。大部分の木は倒れていたが、ある程度はまだ無事だった。ただ、それらの木の幹は灰色で荒涼としており、緑だった葉は焦げ茶色になってしまっていた。
最後の「dismal* grey stems, with dark brown foliage* instead of green.」のところ、要するに炎上してたってことだろうな。
