全訳

こちら側では、炎はせいぜい近くの木を焦がしたくらいだった。地面に燃えるものがなかったのだ。あるところでは、昨日土曜日に木こりが仕事に出ていたのだが、伐り倒され枝葉を落とされたばかりの木が森の中の空き地に並んでいて、断裁機とエンジンのそばにおがくずの山ができていた。そのすぐ近くに仮設小屋があったが人気はなかった。今朝は風はまったくなく、奇妙なことにあらゆるものが静かだった。鳥でさえも静まり返っていた。急いで走っている間、わたしとミッちゃんはささやき声で話し、ときどきお互いを肩越しに見たりした。一・二回立ち止まって周りの音を聴いた。
