“Things have changed,” I said, quietly. “You must keep your head*. There is still hope.”

“Yes. Plentiful* hope—for all this destruction!”

全訳
この段階になってようやく、わたしはリューちゃんにどうしてあげればいいかわかってきた。とんでもない悲劇に巻き込まれて（リューちゃんがウェイブリッジから避難してきたのは明らかだった）リューちゃんは理性を失いかけていたのだ。
「ここはサンベリーから遠いか？」と、わたしは淡々とした口調で尋ねた。
「どうすればいいってのよ？」とリューちゃんは逆に聞いてきた。「あんな化けものがどこにでもいるっていうの？ この地球はやつらに支配されちゃうってんの？」
「ここはサンベリーから遠いか？」
「つい今朝は朝の礼拝をしてたのにーー」
「状況は変わったんだ」とわたしは静かに言った。「落ち着け。まだ希望はある。」
「希望？」
「うん。少なからず希望はあるーーこうした破滅の時においてもな。」
たのむ。話を聞いてくれ。
ひどい目に遭ったんだから、しばらく話させてくれてもいいじゃない。
これだからあんな風になるんだよ。
