I saw an abandoned boat, very small and remote, drifting* down-stream*; and throwing off* the most of my sodden* clothes, I went after it, gained it, and so escaped out of that destruction. There were no oars* in the boat, but I contrived* to paddle*, as well as my parboiled* hands would allow, down the river towards Halliford and Walton, going very tediously* and continually* looking behind me, as you may well understand. I followed the river, because I considered that the water gave me my best (escape, return, giants, of, chance, should, these).

全訳

そして、後方では火星人がこのように次の急襲準備をしており、前方では人類が戦闘のために集まってきているという間、わたしはこの上ない苦痛を覚えながら、炎上しているウェイブリッジの火と煙から逃げ、ロンドン方面へと懸命に進んで行った。遠くで小さく、捨てられたボートが下流に向かって漂流しているのが目に入ったので、濡れた服はほとんど脱ぎ捨てて、ボートを追いかけ、つかまえた。そうしてこの破壊された町から逃れることができた。ボートにオールは積まれていなかったが、半分やけどしている手で可能な限りなんとか漕いで、ハリフォードとウォルトンの方へ下って行った。退屈なほど長い時間漕ぎつづけ、途中しきりに振り返った。そうした理由は君もよくわかるだろう。わたしは川の流れを利用していった。もしあんな巨大ロボが戻ってきたら、水があれば助かる可能性が最も高いと思っていたからだ。
