Halliford, it seemed, was deserted, and several of the houses facing the river were on fire. It was strange to see the place quite tranquil, quite desolate* under the hot blue sky, with the smoke and little threads* of flame going straight up into the heat of the afternoon. アメリカ北部とロンドンは緯度こそだいたい同じ（50°N）くらいだとはいえ、他の条件が違ってくるからこのスケジュールが全てとは限らないけどね。

1. 紫のso thatは結果用法。「そのせいで」「だから」くらいで訳しておくといいのかな。
2. 赤アンダーラインは、the best part of≒most of。「a mile」について、「１マイル」の長さを地図で見てあげると、乗船場所から下船場所までの道のりが１マイルほどだったので、ここは訳さないか、「道中」くらいで訳しました。あと、littleは準否定ですね。eitherは否定と結びついて「どちらも～ない」。

4. 青アンダーラインの単語を並び替えると上の通り。never～without…「～するときはいつも…する」と倒置のセットです。

全訳
ロボットが倒されて湧きあがった熱水はわたしの近くまで流れてきていた。だからほとんど両岸が見えなかった。ただ、いちどだけ、一列に並んだ黒い人影がウェイブリッジの方から来て牧草地を横切って走っているのがわかった。ハリフォードから人は消えており、川に面した家のうち数軒は燃えていた。暑い青空の下、ここがまったくもって平穏で人気がないのは奇妙なことだった。炎の混じった煙がまっすぐに立ち上り、午後の暑い空にとけていった。火事現場で野次馬がいないのは初めてだった。すこし進むと、土手の上の乾いたアシが煙と炎を上げていた。それより内陸では長く広がった火炎が、晩期の干し草畑を着々と灰に変えていた。
