第13章 第８段落
とゆーことで、この段落からわたし(curate=助任司祭)が登場するわ。
もちろん『宇宙戦争』の原作では男だから、「clean-shaven」（ひげがない）とか不自然な記述が出てきてるけど気にしないでちょうだい。
問題編
I do not clearly remember the arrival of the curate, so that probably I dozed*. I became aware of her as a seated figure in soot-smudged* shirt sleeves*, and with her upturned*, clean-shaven* face staring at a faint flickering that danced over the sky. The sky was what is called a mackerel sky—rows and rows of faint down-plumes* of cloud, just tinted* with the midsummer sunset.
I sat up, and at the rustle* of my motion she looked at me quickly.
“Have you any water?” I asked abruptly*.
She shook her head.
“You have been asking for water for the last hour,” she said.

「mackerel sky」はこんな感じの曇り空ね。
「mackerel」は「サバ」よ。サバの模様みたいだからってことらしいわ。
日本だと「いわし雲」とか「うろこ雲」という名前が一般的ですね！
「さば雲」という言葉もあるみたいですけど。
ちなみに、今の時間は「midsummer sunset」と書いてあるから、つい18時ごろだと思っちゃうけど、イギリスで真夏の日没は21時くらいになることもあるわ。
だから、いまはだいたい19時～20時ごろね。

1. オレンジの so thatの意味は、ここでは辞書にはないけど、becauseと同じ意味かな（理由を表す）。
2. 青アンダーラインはwith O Cの形で、Cにあたるのはstaringから。flickeringは「明滅するもの」という名詞ですね。
3. 赤アンダーラインのshake one’s headは「首を横に振る」「いいえと言う」。反対にうなずくときは「nod」ですね。
全訳
リューちゃんがわたしのもとに来たところははっきりとは覚えていない。おそらくわたしはうたたねをしていたのだろう。やがて、誰かが袖がすすでよごれたシャツを着て座ってるのに気づいた。それが出会いだった。リューちゃんは上を向いて、ひげのない顔で、かすかに明滅する光が空の向こうに踊っているのを見つめていた。このときの空はいわゆるうろこ雲だった。かすかなダウンの羽毛のような雲が何列にも連なり、ちょうど真夏の日没で染まっていた。
わたしは身を起こし、その際にガサガサ音を立てたことでリューちゃんはすぐにわたしを見た。
「み、水あるか？」とわたしは唐突に聞いた。
リューちゃんは首を横に振った。
「あんた、この１時間ずっと寝言で『水くれー』って言ってたじゃない」と。
「Have you any water？」というセリフがあるが、イギリスでは「Do you have…」を「Have you…」と言うこともあるからな（口語）。覚えておこう。
