One grey-headed old gentleman came and abused* the South-Western Company bitterly (to my sister). “It wants showing up*,” he said.
1. 青アンダーラインの単語を並び替えると、Quite a number of people whoです。quite a number of～で「たくさんの～」。quite a few～と同じですね。
2. 紫のitが指しているものは、the South-Western Company。
3. 緑のshowを適切に変形させるとshowing。need Vingとほぼ同じで、want Vingという形もあります。need Ving≒need to be P.P. ですから、want Ving≒need to be P.P.と解釈すればいいわけです。It(=鉄道会社) needs to be shown upで、「恥をかかせられるべきだ」が直訳。「恥を知れ」ですね。はしれはしれ～。
全訳
鉄道の運行は相当乱れていた。サウス・ウェスタン社の鉄道網で戻ってくる友人を待っている人がたくさんいて、駅の周りに立っていた。ある白髪まじりの老いた紳士が、妹に対してサウス・ウェスタン社をひどく罵りながら近づいてきた。「恥を知れ」と言っていた。
あれですか。この老人みたいに悪そうなやつは男のままって感じですか。
