“There’s hosts of* people driving into Kingston in traps and carts and things, with boxes of valuables and all that,” she said. “They come from Molesey and Weybridge and Walton, and they say there’s been guns heard at Chertsey, heavy firing, and that mounted soldiers have told them to get off at once because the Martians are coming. We heard guns firing at Hampton Court station, but we thought it was thunder. What the dickens* does it all mean? The Martians can’t get out of their pit, can they?”

全訳
１、２本の列車がリッチモンド、パトニー、キングストンから入って来た。乗っていた人々は、一日がかりでボートに乗りに出かけたが、閘門が閉まっていて、パニックが起こっている雰囲気を感じ取っていた。青と白のブレザーを着た女性が妹に話しかけたが、その話には奇妙なことが多く含まれていた。
「たくさんの人が馬車に乗ったりしてキングストンに駆け込んできたのよ。貴重品の箱とかを持ったりしてね」と女性はいった。「モレシー、ウェイブリッジ、ウォルトンからきたんですって。その人たちは『チャーツィーで大砲を撃つ音を聞いた。馬に乗った兵士が、火星人が来るから今すぐ逃げろと叫んでいた』と言っていたわ。わたしたちもハンプトン・コート駅で砲声を聞いたけど、雷だと思ったのよね。いったいどういうことなのかしら？火星人はクレーターから出られないはずじゃなかったの？」
妹は答えられなかった。
