全訳

火星人たちは「蜘蛛のような巨大な機械で、高さは約100フィート（≒30ｍ）あり、特急と同じくらいの速さで移動でき、強烈なレーザー光線を放つこともできる」と新聞にかかれていた。主としてRFA（王立野戦砲兵隊）出身の擬装中隊がホーセル共有地のまわりの土地に送り込まれ、特にウォーキング地区とロンドンの間に配備された。5体のロボットがテムズ川の方に侵攻しているのが発見され、1体はたまたま撃破できた。だがその他の戦闘では砲弾はことごとく外れ、砲兵はすぐにレーザー光線で全滅した。新聞で兵士の犠牲が多いということは言及されていたが、記事の語り口は楽観的だった。
