The Martians, alarmed* by the approach of a crowd, had killed a number of people with a quick-firing gun, so the story ran. The telegram concluded with the words: “(to, as, seem, they, be, formidable*), the Martians have not moved from the pit into which they have fallen, and, indeed, seem incapable ( ) doing so. 1. オレンジのa number ofの意味は「たくさん」。ここは「いくつか」よりは「たくさん」のほうがいいかな。
2. 赤のso the story ranは、第５・６章あたりで述べていたことです。ホーセル共有地での大虐殺のことですね。
3. 青アンダーラインの語を並び替えると上の通り。倒置っぽくなってる「～as…」で譲歩の意味（Though…）が出てきます。ここでは「Though they seem to be formidable」と書き換えられますね。
4. 紫のandが繋いでいるものは、have, seem。
5. 緑のカッコ内に入る前置詞はof。be incapable of Ving≒be able to Vですね。
6. 茶色のdoing soが指しているものは、move from the pit。
全訳
火星人は、群衆が近づいてきていることに不安になり、レーザー光線の速射で多くの人々を殺害した。以前述べたとおりである。だがロンドンに送られた電報はこのような言葉で結ばれていた。「火星軍は恐るべき相手に見えるかもしれないが、着陸した地点のクレーターから動いていない。実際は動くことがままならないのかもしれない。おそらくこれは地球の重力が火星より相対的に大きいためであろう。」 この最後に届いた電報に基づいて、新聞の論説委員は読者を安心させるように内容を膨らませて執筆した。
