全訳
ウェリントン・ストリートじゅうで、みんなピンクの号外やビラをパタパタさせながら読んでいたんだろう。ストランドは突然、こうした先駆者の後追いをしてきた行商人が大勢声を張り上げ、うるさくなった。人々は我先にと乗合馬車を降りてきて、新聞を手に入れようとしていた。間違いなく、それまでどんなに無関心な群衆であっても、このニュースを聞いて激しく興奮しただろう。妹の話によれば、ストランドにある地図屋はシャッターを上げているところで、レモンイエローの手袋まで着けて日曜の装いをした女性が店内におり、急いでサリーの地図を目に焼き付けているのが見えたそうだ。
take down the shuttersでシャッターを閉めてるのか開けてるのか問題は以前もやった気がするが、以前と同じく、「開けている」で意味を取ってみるぜ。だって商機だもんな。
