There was a man with his wife and two boys and some articles of furniture in a cart* such as greengrocers* use. He was driving from the direction of Westminster Bridge; and close behind him came a hay waggon* with five or six (respect)-looking people in it, and some boxes and bundles. The faces of these people were haggard*, and their entire appearance contrasted conspicuously* with the Sabbath*-best appearance of the people on the omnibuses*. People in fashionable clothing peeped at them out of cabs*. They stopped at the Square as if undecided which way to take, and finally turned eastward along the Strand. Some way behind these came a man in workday clothes, riding one of those old-fashioned tricycles* with a small front wheel. He was dirty and white in the face.

全訳

妹は新聞を持ったままストランド通り沿いにトラファルガー・スクエアまで歩いていった。その途中で、ウェスト・サリーから来た避難民も見た。ある男が、妻と2人の息子とともに二輪馬車に乗っていた。八百屋みたいにその馬車に家具を積んでいた。彼はウェストミンスター・ブリッジの方から馬車を操縦してきた。そのすぐ後ろから来た馬車には、きちんとした身なりの人が５～６人、箱や小包と一緒に干草用の貨車に座っていた。これらの人々の顔はやつれていた。全体的な外見は、安息日のおめかしをしている乗合馬車の乗客と明確に対称的だった。流行りの服を着ている人々はこうしたみすぼらしい姿の避難民を馬車からじろじろ見ていた。避難民たちはトラファルガー広場で停車した。どちらに進んでいいかわからないようだった。だがとうとう東を向き、ストランド通りを進みだした。これらの馬車のいくらか後ろからは、仕事服を着た人が、小さな前輪がついた流行おくれの三輪車をこいできていた。彼はきたならしく、顔色は悪かった。
