妹は道を戻ってヴィクトリア駅方面に向かった。道すがら、大勢の先ほど見たような人々とすれ違った。わたしに似てる姿を見たような気もしたそうだ。また、妹は異常な数の警察が交通規制をしているのに気づいた。避難民の中には、乗合馬車の同乗者と情報交換している人たちもいた。ある人は火星軍を見たと言い張っていた。「竹馬にボイラーがついててさ、間違いないぜ、群衆の間をのっしのっしと歩いていったんだ。」たいていの人たちはこの奇妙な経験を聞いて興奮したり活気づいたりしていた。
