全訳

１、2台の避難者を乗せた馬車がオックスフォード・ストリートを通り過ぎていった。数台の同じような馬車がメリルボーン・ロードにも走っていた。だが、ニュースが広まるのがとても遅かったので、集まって噂話くらいはしていたけれど、リージェント・ストリートとポートランド・プレースはいつものように日曜夜に散歩する人でいっぱいだった。そして、あちこちにともっているガス灯の下で、リージェンツ・パークに沿って、カップルが物静かに連れ添って「散歩」していた。彼らの人数もいつもと同じくらいだった。その夜は暖かく風がなかったので、少し鬱陶しかった。砲撃音は断続的に続いており、深夜を過ぎたころ南の方で幕電が光っているように見えた。
