全訳

無論、その日妹が行った塾で、生物の授業に出ていた生徒たちはみな強く興味を持っていたが、街角では、人々がいつもと違う日常に興奮してる雰囲気は感じられなかった。午後に出た新聞は大見出しをつけて記事を書いていた。でも、午後８時になるまでは、ホーセル共有地周辺での軍隊の動きや、ウォーキングとウェイブリッジの間で松の木が燃えているということくらいしか書くことがなかった。そしてセント・ジェームズ・ガゼッテが、特別号外で、電信が通じなくなったというありのままの事実を報道した。これは、燃えた松の木が電線に倒れたせいだと考えられている。これ以上のことはその夜はわからなかった。わたしはレザーヘッドまで往復していた夜である。
