She read and re-read the paper, fearing the worst had happened to me. She was restless, and after supper prowled* out again aimlessly. She went to bed a little after midnight, and was awakened from lurid* dreams in the small hours of Monday by the sound of door knockers, feet running in the street, distant drumming*, and a clamour* of bells. Red reflections danced on the ceiling. For a moment she lay astonished, wondering whether day had come or the world gone mad. Then she jumped out of bed and ran to the window.

全訳
妹は何度も何度も新聞を読み返しては、最悪の事態がわたしに起こっていないか不安になっていた。妹は落ち着かずに、軽い夕食を食べ終わると再びあてもなく散歩しに出かけた。帰宅して、試験の暗記事項に集中しようとしたが、気が散ってできなかった。夜12時を少し過ぎてから床についたが、月曜のまだ暗いうちに恐ろしい夢から起こされた。玄関を叩く音や、通りをドタバタと走る足音がうるさく、さらには遠くで太鼓が鳴っていたり、ベルがじゃんじゃら鳴っていたりしていたからだ。天井には赤い火が反射してちらちらと踊っていた。朝が来たのか、それとも世界がおかしくなってしまったのか、と戸惑って、しばらく妹は呆然として動けなかった。そしてベッドから飛び起きて窓に走り寄った。
