アルバニー・ストリートを駆けてきたのはクラレンスで、角を曲がると突然その音がガタガタと聞こえ始め、近づくにつれうるさくなり、やがてゆっくりと遠ざかり音がやんだ。これに続いてさらに数台の馬車タクシーが走って来た。乗り物の行列の先駆けだった。それらの馬車は飛ぶように走り、勾配を南下してユーストン方面に向かうものは少なく、大部分は逆方面のチョーク・ファーム駅に向かっていた。そこからノーザン・ウェスタン鉄道の特別列車が出発していた。
