Then the door behind her opened, and the man who lodged* across the landing* came in, dressed only in shirt, trousers, and slippers, his braces* loose about his waist, his hair disordered from his pillow.
“What the devil is it?” he asked. “A fire? What a devil of a row*!”

2. 赤のincomprehensible=in+comprehend+ibleなので「理解できない」あたり。
全訳
長いこと、妹は茫然自失として窓の外を見つめていた。警官が一軒一軒玄関を叩いていたり、わけのわからないことを叫んだりしていた。そうしていると背後のドアが開き、踊り場の向かいに泊まっていた男が出てきた。彼はシャツ・ズボン・スリッパしか着ておらず、腰の周りにサスペンダーが垂れさがっていた。さらに髪は寝癖でぐちゃぐちゃだった。
「いったいなんなんだよ？」と問いかけるように言ってきた。「火事なのか？めっちゃうるさいんだよ！」
「his hair disordered from his pillow」はさすがに「寝癖で髪がぐちゃぐちゃだった」と訳した方がいいな。「枕から髪が乱れていた」だとおかしいか。
英語だと具体的なものを求めるっていう感性がやっぱりあるんだろうか。
